Jesus loves a good wedding.
Weddings are glorious occasions that celebrate life, love and our Lord. Marriage matters to God. When a man and a woman join together in marriage, I believe the heavens rejoice and the angelic host celebrates. What a privilege and joy it is to join together two souls in holy matrimony!
Scripture tells us that Jesus returned from the wilderness, where he had combated and defeated Satan, and went to a wedding. Having an abundance of guests show up to their wedding, the wine was about to run out when Jesus performed the first of his many miracles recorded in the Bible. The water pots were empty so the Lord Jesus commanded they be filled with water. Once the wedding servants did as they were told, Jesus immediately transformed the water into wine. Not any wine, but the BEST wine. He demonstrated that he can use the poorest of earthen vessels for His purpose, cracks and all.
Remember, Jesus just spent a lengthy time in the desert where he could have chosen to work a miracle to meet his own needs; but he chose not to. Instead, he waited to use his supernatural gifts to serve others, adding to the most magnificent moments of sweetness and joy experienced by two people, a man and a woman, who have come together to unite as one, in one of life’s most common relationships.
But marriage is anything but common. It is an opportunity to glorify and reflect God in our daily lives.
Through transforming water to wine, Jesus models a course of action God expects us to follow as we do life together. As Christians, we have the opportunity to turn water into wine. We can meet the needs of others, giving them our best, regardless of the circumstances. We can bring peace and comfort where we encounter conflict and crisis.
Jesus chose a wedding to perform his first of many miracles. It’s up to us to go and do likewise.
On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
