The obedient person building their house

Lord, where in my life am I not doing what Jesus said?

The obedient person building their house

This question from Jesus may be sometimes overlooked because immediately following it He gives the illustrations of the obedient person building their house with a firm foundation upon solid rock, and the disobedient person who has no foundation. The former’s house stands strong in the floodwaters, the later’s house collapses. But that’s not our point today. Let’s just pause and think about what Jesus is asking. “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?”

What a convicting question! If Jesus is my Lord, why am I not being completely obedient? Now, there are places where I absolutely know in the past I have disobeyed. But now? I need to be obedient. Some areas are obvious, but others I may not recognize until I’m in the moment. For example, where am I not showing love to God and others when I should? When am I failing to trust God for my provisions? When do I lack faith? When am I not being innocent like a child? When am I praying, or giving, or fasting more for show than from a humble, sincere heart?

Those and so many others are places I need to obey. But I don’t know that in my own wisdom I can notice every time I’m not being obedient in some subtle ways. Sometimes there’s too much of me to see where there needs to be more of Him. So, in response to the question Jesus asked in Luke 6:46, here’s what I want to ask of the Lord, and I challenge you to do something similar, in order to be more obedient to the One we call Lord. “Lord, where in my life am I not doing what Jesus said? Please reveal to me these opportunities for obedience.”
