I have used the feeling of peace as evidence

For many years I have used the feeling of peace as evidence that an action or decision is God’s will. I believe that still holds true. I believe the Holy Spirit gives us peace when we are on His path and in God’s plan. But we must know that peace is not always complete. In this scripture, Jesus says, “Now my heart is troubled.”

It doesn’t sound like Jesus was feeling peace in His heart at that moment. In fact, it sounds like He may have had some anxiety. Then He made the statement that tells us peace is not always the only evidence of being in God’s will. “But this is why I came…” Do you know what that is? Confident assurance. It is the confident assurance that even though there is great pain and suffering ahead, it is within the will of God and serves the purpose of glorifying Him. Do you know another word for “confident assurance”? It is peace. Yes, it’s still peace. Not the peace of “I’m not concerned” but rather the peace of “God is with me and in His power we will accomplish His will together, no matter what happens.”

We ride into hard situations on the power of our God. We may feel small and weak on our own, but the One who supports us, who goes with us, who lives inside us, is powerful beyond measure. There are times when some aspects of a decision or action will cause your heart to be troubled. But if you have the confident assurance of the Holy Spirit, then it’s time to move forward in His great power. Let God be glorified in accomplishing His will by carrying you though hard things.
