Following His Lead

At the command of the Lord the sons of Israel would set out, and at the command of the Lord they would camp; as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped. NUMBERS 9:18 (NASB)

Following a beautiful woodland path on a summer’s day is one of life’s pleasures, how I long for such summer mornings on chilly days in March. There is no trouble following the path, after all it doesn’t move. Yet following people on foot or in a car can be difficult, especially when they are faster than you or are hidden by terrain or traffic. In today’s verse we read about the people of Israel after they left Egypt, following where God lead them in the wilderness.

They followed a pillar of cloud when it moved and stayed where it settled for however long it stayed. It was a very visual guide to where God wanted them to be at any one time; if they could not see the cloud then they were quite clearly not in the right place, and worse still separated from His presence.

As Christians in the twenty-first Century, we do not follow a pillar of cloud as God’s guidance. Instead, we follow Him in our life each day if we keep the lines of communication open. We do this by seeking Him in leading a holy life, forsaking the temporary pleasures of sin and repenting often. We find the guidelines of leading a holy life in His Word, and in seeking His Holy Spirit in regular prayer. There is no other way to follow Him other than this; this is our pillar guiding us in this world.

Dear reader, are you following His lead today, in His Word and prayer? Is His Spirit by your side guiding your footsteps along life’s way? Keep yourself close to Him my friend lest you lose sight of the path before you, and even worse lose sight of Him.
