A Father’s Day Message: The Father’s Heart

When we are weak, He strengthens us. When we fall, He lifts us up. When we cannot continue on our own, He walks beside us.

Psalm 103

Father’s Day is a special time to celebrate fatherhood. I remember my first Father’s Day after my daughter Danielle was born. I imagined being honored and celebrated, but instead I was handed my seven-month-old daughter and told, “You’re her father—she’s yours for the day.” Like most fathers, I quickly learned that fatherhood often means serving rather than being served.

Many Father’s Day messages focus on the responsibilities of fathers, especially in a culture where fatherhood is often neglected. Yet today I want to focus on another Father—the Heavenly Father. Sadly, many people struggle to understand God as Father because their experiences with earthly fathers were painful. Some experienced abandonment, neglect, or abuse. As a result, they often project those experiences onto God.

But the Bible presents a very different picture. The amazing truth is that God invites us to call Him Father. Through Jesus Christ, He brings us into His family and makes us heirs of His kingdom. Psalm 103 reveals the beautiful heart of our Heavenly Father toward His children.

1. A Giving Heart

David begins by saying:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (Psalm 103:2).

God continually blesses His children. Throughout Scripture, He reminds His people not to forget His goodness, His provision, His mercy, and His faithfulness.

James writes, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). God is a generous Father who delights in giving what is good. Jesus said that if earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will our Heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him.

God’s heart is a giving heart.

2. A Forgiving Heart

David continues:

“Who forgives all your iniquities” (Psalm 103:3).

Forgiveness has always been central to God’s heart. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God promised, “I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

Micah beautifully describes God’s forgiveness:

“Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression?” (Micah 7:18).

A pardon means releasing someone from the penalty they deserve. That is exactly what God does for us through Jesus Christ. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins on the cross, allowing God to forgive and restore us.

Micah also says that God casts our sins into the depths of the sea. David echoes this truth:

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

God doesn’t merely forgive; He removes our sins completely. His heart is a forgiving heart.

3. A Healing Heart

Psalm 103 also says God:

“heals all your diseases” (Psalm 103:3).

God cares about every part of our lives—body, soul, and spirit. David testified, “I cried out to You, and You healed me” (Psalm 30:2).

One of the deepest healings God provides is spiritual healing. Through Hosea, God declared:

“I will heal their backsliding; I will love them freely” (Hosea 14:4).

Backsliding occurs when we drift away from God and return to old patterns of life. Yet God’s heart is to restore and heal. When we confess our sins, seek His forgiveness, and return to Him, He graciously renews us.

God’s heart is a healing heart.

4. A Merciful Heart

Psalm 103 repeatedly emphasizes God’s mercy. Mercy means God does not give us the punishment we deserve, while grace means He gives us blessings we do not deserve.

David highlights three expressions of God’s mercy.

A Long Fuse

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy” (Psalm 103:8).

God is patient with us. He gives us opportunity after opportunity to repent and return to Him. His patience should never be mistaken for indifference. Rather, it reflects His loving desire that we turn back to Him.

A Short Memory

“He will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever” (Psalm 103:9).

Unlike people, who often hold grudges, God chooses not to remember the sins He has forgiven. He does not continually throw our failures back in our faces. His forgiveness is genuine and complete.

A Thick Skin

“He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10).

God exercises incredible forbearance and patience. If He treated us exactly as our sins deserved, none of us could stand. Instead, His kindness leads us toward repentance and restoration.

God’s heart is a merciful heart.

5. A Big Heart

David writes:

“As the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him” (Psalm 103:11).

The Apostle Paul expands on this truth in Romans 8, declaring that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus—not death, life, angels, trials, persecution, or any other created thing.

God’s love cannot be measured. It has no boundaries and no limits. Regardless of what we face, His love remains constant.

The greatest demonstration of this love was when God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins so that we could have a relationship with Him.

God’s heart is a big heart.

6. An Understanding Heart

Finally, David says:

“As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:13-14).

God understands us completely. He knows our weaknesses, struggles, and limitations. He knows how fragile we are.

Jesus acknowledged this when He told His disciples, “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Because God knows our frailty, He responds with compassion. He does not crush the weak or abandon those who stumble. Instead, He patiently strengthens and restores them.

God knows everything about us—not only what we are capable of doing, but also what He is capable of doing in and through us.

His heart is an understanding heart.

Conclusion

One of the most moving moments in sports history occurred during the 1992 Olympics. British runner Derrick Redman was favored to win the 400-meter race. Midway through the race, he tore his hamstring and collapsed in pain.

Determined to finish, he struggled to his feet and began hopping toward the finish line. Suddenly, his father broke through security, wrapped his arm around his son, and said, “Let’s finish this together.”

That picture reflects the heart of our Heavenly Father.

When we are weak, He strengthens us. When we fall, He lifts us up. When we cannot continue on our own, He walks beside us.

The Father’s heart is a giving heart, a forgiving heart, a healing heart, a merciful heart, a big heart, and an understanding heart. Above all, it is a heart filled with love—a love demonstrated through Jesus Christ, who died so that we might become children of God and spend eternity with Him.

That is the Father’s heart.
