What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. (Matthew 10: 29-31 NLT)
For Christians, things are going to get better because we are more valuable to God than a flock of sparrows.
On returning from church this past Sunday, I listened to Christian radio, and a song caught my attention. It was “Sparrows and Lilies” by Pat Barrett. The next day I found it on YouTube and played it repeatedly.
As I listened to the lyrics, I thought about people on my prayer list with the agony and hardship they were experiencing. People who are fighting various types of cancer, constant pain, struggles with anxiety, betrayal and divorce, hereditary disorders, loved ones dying in human terms too soon, and family and friends approaching a Christ-less eternity. As the songwriter says, “I know it’s hard.” I told myself that these people need to hear this song’s message—things will get better. I decided I would write this blog for them or all who are struggling with life’s challenges.
In Christ, things will always get better. For some, that will be sooner; for others, later, but it will happen. I can’t tell you who will be in the sooner or later group; that is beyond my ability to know. I generally pray for sooner. I can tell you that God’s heartthrob is at the center of the universe and that His love is big enough to reach the whole world but small enough to be directed at just you and me. Our circumstances never determine God’s love, but His love transcends our circumstances. Our lives, at times, can cause us to lose track of God, but God never loses track of us.
We need to take to heart the old African-American spiritual, which says, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches over me.” Barrett closes his song with a statement of faith— “Hold on love, Things are going to get better, I know they are.” We should do likewise.
