A Memorial Day Reflection

Today, I pause to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. Millions of Americans have laid down their lives since 1776—soldiers and civilians alike—to protect the freedoms I enjoy today. Their sacrifice reminds me of what Jesus said about love: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). I can only imagine the courage it took to face danger for the sake of others.

Memorial Day often comes with picnics, barbecues, and family trips—but I want to pause and remember the cost of freedom. I want to honor those who served, not only in ceremonies but by living fully, cherishing the life they helped secure. The Bible says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants” (Psalm 116:15). Their sacrifice is not forgotten by God, and I want to ensure it is not forgotten by me.

I also think about the families who grieve. I pray for them: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). May God’s comfort surround them, lifting their hearts with His goodness.

This day reminds me of spiritual freedom as well. Just as soldiers gave their lives to protect us, Jesus gave His life to grant me a personal relationship with God. In remembrance of His sacrifice, I am reminded: “Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). My gratitude deepens when I see the parallel between the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield and the ultimate sacrifice on the cross.

Today, I will pause. I will remember. I will give thanks. And I will live in such a way that their courage and love are honored—not just today, but every day.

Why We Remember: To thank God for those willing to serve, to make their sacrifice meaningful by recognizing its cost and to pass these stories of courage to the next generation.

Heavenly Father,

Today we remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We thank You for their courage, sacrifice, and love for others.

Comfort the families who carry the pain of loss, and surround them with Your peace and strength. Help us never forget the cost of freedom, and teach us to live with gratitude, humility, and purpose.

May we honor the fallen not only with words, but with lives marked by kindness, justice, and compassion. Grant rest to those who have served and peace to our nation.

In Your holy name,

Amen.
