Memorial Day: No Greater Love

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

Monday is Memorial Day. It’s a day to remember those who died while serving in America’s armed forces. It is a day to remember those who died while keeping America free, which should then be a vivid reminder, that freedom is never free. It is a precious gift given to us that cost the lives of so many.

But there is a greater freedom that was won over 2,000 years ago, freedom from sin and death, and it was purchased at a very great cost as well, as Jesus died upon the cross to set us free from sin and death, and to give us eternal life.

“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh.” (Romans 8:1-3)

There was truly no greater love than this, as Jesus took our place and died the death we deserve so that we can be set free from the power of sin and death over our lives and be given His righteousness and eternal life in its place.

And it was all because He loved us.

God said He loved us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3), and He has written His love indelibly upon His hands (Isaiah 49:16), which He showed on the day of His resurrection.

This coming Monday let us remember those brave men and women who gave their lives so that we can be free, and let us always remember what Jesus did upon the cross as He died to set us free.

Amen! There is no greater love than what Jesus’s sacrifice upon the cross for our sins and no greater freedom than what He has given us; freedom from the power and penalty of sin and death, so that we could have eternal life with Him for all who have and will receive Him as their Lord and Savior. And even when I think of the freedom our veterans gave us in our country by sacrificing their lives, one of those freedoms we have as a result is the freedom to come together and worship Jesus freely in our country and share Him with those around us. We must never take that for granted while we still have that freedom. That’s why the writer of Hebrews writes in Hebrews 10:24-25, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”
