Grace
As I’ve been preparing to teach a Bible study and deliver a sermon, grace has been on mind a lot. Grace is a word we hear often. But, I don’t know how much we know about it, let alone understand the gravity of its meaning.
What is grace?
Grace is the unmerited favor of God towards humanity. As Scripture reveals, grace is the expression of God’s love, kindness, and mercy toward us, not because of anything we have done to earn it, but simply because of His sovereign choice to lavish it upon us.
In the New Testament, grace is most clearly seen in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Grace is foundational to the Christian understanding of salvation. Nothing happens without it. We need grace for our faith to experience lift-off.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2.8-9 (NIV)
Ephesians 2:8-9 captures the very essence of grace in the Christian faith. This passage highlights that salvation is a gift from God, received through faith, and it is not something that can be earned through our human efforts.
Grace not only initiates salvation but it also sustains the believer’s life. The Bible reveals that God’s grace is not only a key ingredient for salvation but is also an ever-present power in our lives as believers, helping us to navigate the storms of life and helping us overcome weaknesses and trials.
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
Grace is the undeserved favor and loving kindness of God towards humanity, made manifest in Jesus Christ, through which we receive salvation and are empowered to live lives pleasing to God.
