Guardians of the Saints

Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2KINGS 6:17.

This was my devotional from “Our Daily Bread “ this morning, the scripture tells one of my favourite Bible stories. It is a constant reminder that God protects His saints, the children of God. No matter our circumstances and how downcast we may feel God is always present with us, He even has angels by our side looking after us. The scripture today reminded me of two stories I had heard years ago.

The first story is about a remote mission station in Africa in a province beset by rebellion and violence. The fighting reached a peak one night around the mission station, but no attack came against the isolated missionaries. It was sometime after the rebellion had passed that a missionary asked a former rebel why the station had not been attacked, the reply came that the rebels were afraid of the heavy military guard around the compound!

The second story which I heard recently is about a young christian lady in a city, who walked home from work each night. She had prayed often about the danger of the dark streets on the way home. One night in an alley close to home she saw a man silhouetted looking at her, she prayed silently and walked past the man and made it home. The next morning she was shocked to hear that a young lady had been raped in that alley at the same time she had been there. She contacted the police and gave a description of the man she saw, he was the guilty rapist. He told the police later he had left her alone because she had two large bodyguards, one on either side of her.

Such stories are a reminder that the God we love and worship takes care of us. He is always with us, as are His angels protecting us. In times of vulnerability we can be confident that we are never alone.

Dear Father God, thankyou for redeeming me through Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour. I am grateful for Your constant provision each day and the protection of Your angelic host. Amen.
