Are You a Passive Christian?

Romans 6:4–5

Ever wondered how it all happened? As a Christian, you find yourself under a new Master, Jesus Christ.

We’re told we’re dead to sin and now alive in Him, walking in a new life. So, what’s the secret behind this transformation? Well, according to Paul, the answer lies in something called union with Christ.

In the book of Romans, chapter 6, verse 4, Paul puts it like this: “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.”

It’s a bit of a mouthful, but stay with me here.

You see, righteousness wasn’t just handed to us as a gift because of Christ’s death. No, it goes deeper than that. We’re not just beneficiaries of His sacrifice; we’re participants.

When Christ was on that cross, you were there too. Yes, you! When He died, at that very moment, you were counted as having died with Him. That’s why you’re now free from the clutches of sin.

You’ve died into “His death.” Sin can’t be your master anymore because, well, how can something have a hold over you when you’re already dead?

Romans 6:5 adds another layer to this mystery: “For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection.”

Just as you were with Him in His death, you’re also with Him in His resurrection. Your faith binds you completely to Him. Just as Jesus rose never to die again, so it is with you. His victory becomes your victory.

So, as a Christian, you’re not just a passive observer of Christ’s work. You’re an active participant, intimately linked with His death and resurrection.

his union with Christ is what sets you free from sin’s mastery. It’s a truth that should inspire you to live in the fullness of the new life you’ve been given. Embrace it, and let the victory of our Lord become your victory.
