I was reading in 1 Kings 17. I was blown away with this thought, “Anyone who thinks the Bible is boring and irrelevant has never cracked open the Bible.” The nation was on the skids. Two politicians, a power couple, were dominating the news. Their marriage was a political alliance and they were ambitious, aggressive and cunning. Their values were perverted, and they had a small army of religious hacks who actively promoted their sleaze to the culture, especially to the younger generation. The couple was Ahab and Jezebel.
Economically, a drought brought an economic downturn which impacted everyone and everything. No one argued if the nation was in a recession. The question that was bandied about was over the “D” word – An economic Depression.
The national news wasn’t pretty but the chapter does a kind of local news spotlight on one ordinary family. It’s a inside look at a single mom with a young boy in a time period with no Social Security or social safety nets. The mom scraped and clawed out a poverty existence for a time but now they were down to their last little bit of flour and oil. In the mom’s own words they had enough for one last meal and then they were going to die.
Curiously, right at this time the man of God, Elijah, shows up. He is hungry too. He makes an unusual request. He asks the mom to make this last meal for him. What should she do? If you were in her sandals, what would you do? She has a little boy. She has no help? It must have gotten more confusing when the prophet said, “Do not fear. If you use that last little bit of flour and little bit of oil to make me a meal, your flour and oil jar will not be exhausted during the entire three and a half year famine.” Was this a religious con job or should she take a risk and bet on the God of the resupply. She must have thought, “Am I crazy to consider this offer?”
She bet on God and made the meal for Elijah. Every day she went to the pantry and there was a little bit of flour and a little bit of oil to eat a nutritious meal that day. She met the GOD OF THE RESUPPLY. She found you can’t out give God. She discovered it is hard to understand God’s math and ways sometimes, but God takes care of His people.
In our times of shortages, supply line issues, inflation, and worry – Have you met the GOD OF THE RESUPPLY? Do you need to hear God say today, “Do not fear!” You never quite find out Jesus is all you need, until Jesus is all you have got, and then you find out experientally, He is all you need.
