Scripture Reading: Book of Revelation 18:1-24
“For in one hour is thy judgment come.” — Revelation 18:10
Revelation 18 is the funeral of human pride.
Babylon—the symbol of wealth, power, luxury, corruption, and worldly glory—falls suddenly. The system that once appeared untouchable collapses in a single hour. Kings mourn. Merchants weep. Nations stand shocked as everything they trusted disappears before their eyes.
Why?
Because anything built apart from God eventually falls apart.
Humanity spends generations building kingdoms without God, celebrating success without holiness, pursuing pleasure without truth, and trusting systems more than the Creator Himself. But Revelation 18 reminds us how fragile earthly glory truly is.
What looks permanent today can vanish tomorrow.
Money cannot save the soul.
Power cannot stop eternity.
Fame cannot rescue a heart from judgment.
Success cannot replace salvation.
The people mourning in Revelation were not grieving the loss of holiness—they were grieving the loss of comfort, wealth, and control. Their sorrow revealed where their treasure truly was.
That warning reaches into our generation.
Many people are building entire lives around temporary things while neglecting eternal ones. Careers become idols. Possessions become identity. Public approval becomes addiction. People spend more time preparing for retirement than preparing for eternity.
But one day every earthly system will shake.
And only what is rooted in Jesus Christ will remain standing.
This chapter is not written merely to frighten us. It is written to awaken us. God warns because He desires people to detach from what is dying and anchor themselves to what is eternal.
The tragedy is not that Babylon falls.
The tragedy is when people tie their hearts to something God already declared temporary.
Jesus warned repeatedly: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth…”
Why?
Because this world cannot hold together forever.
Everything around us is passing away.
Only the Kingdom of God remains eternal.
So today, examine your heart honestly.
If everything earthly disappeared tomorrow, would Jesus still be enough for you?
Because in the end, only one foundation will survive the collapse of this world:
Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Open our eyes to how temporary this world truly is. Forgive us for the times we have placed too much trust in money, success, comfort, possessions, or human systems while neglecting eternity. Do not let our hearts become attached to things that cannot last.
Lord, teach us to build our lives upon Jesus Christ alone. Remove every idol hidden within us—every worldly obsession, every prideful ambition, every misplaced dependency that slowly pulls us away from Your presence.
Awaken us before the shaking comes. Help us live with eternal perspective instead of temporary priorities.
Amen.
