This Is the Nicest Thing Anyone Has Ever Given Me!

A simple gift of Scripture reminded me that small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference in someone’s life.

Years ago, my wife and I were fortunate to travel to Scotland. While there we went into a gift shop. The young woman about age thirty working there was kind and friendly. A few days later we went back to the shop and saw her again. This time I remembered to take one of the Gideons Testaments that I had brought on the trip. I walked up to the counter and told her that I was a Gideon, and we like to give away Scripture as a gift. I told her that the Testament has all of the New Testament, as well as Psalms and Proverbs from the Old Testament. I handed it to her, and she took the Testament in her hand, looked at it and then looked at me. Then she said, “This is the nicest thing anyone has ever given me!”

I’ve never forgotten her words.

I share this story with you because all of us can give something to another person that can mean a lot to them. The gift doesn’t have to even cost any money. We can all smile at someone who may really need to see someone smile. Your smile may give hope or comfort or help heal a wound. We can all be kind to one another just by taking the time to just listen to someone or lend a hand and have kind words to say.

We can all encourage each other, pray for one another, say thank you, good job, or say, “God bless you and your family.” These acts of kindness can be a help to us and help to others. God can use each one of us to bless someone else.

“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4
