Based on the Book of Common Prayer
Scripture
“Because I live, you also will live.” — John 14:19
This prayer brings us face‑to‑face with one of the deepest truths of the Christian faith: Jesus has taken away the sting of death. Not by explaining death, not by softening it, but by passing through it and transforming it from the inside.
The prayer asks that we might “follow in faith where you have led the way.” Christ has gone before us—into suffering, into death, into the grave—and then beyond it into resurrection life. Because He has walked this path, we do not walk it alone. Because He has conquered death, we do not face it with fear.
The prayer uses a tender phrase: “that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you.” For the Christian, death is not a collapse into darkness but a falling asleep in Christ—resting in the One who holds us, shelters us, and wakes us in His likeness.
This is not wishful thinking. It is the promise secured by the cross and sealed by the empty tomb. Christ’s tender mercies surround us in life, sustain us in death, and raise us in glory.
To pray this prayer is to say: “Lord, let my life follow Your footsteps. Let my faith rest in Your victory. Let my hope be anchored in Your resurrection.”
Faith does not remove sorrow, but it removes fear. Faith does not deny death, but it denies death the final word. Faith follows Christ—through everything—into life everlasting.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, You have taken away the sting of death. Lead us in faith along the path You have walked, that when our journey ends, we may fall asleep in Your peace and rise in Your likeness. Hold us in Your tender mercy until we see You face to face. Amen.
