Driving in the Fog

Turn on your lights, slow down, be safe, and drive through the fog.  God is still God... whatever you may be facing, shall pass.

Something happened today that I found very illustrative.  The fog rolled in.

OK, I realize that fog isn’t mysterious, and it isn’t strange – but it caused me to think (or, should I say, reflect).

I was coming home for lunch when I saw fog ahead – it was rolling in from the Gulf (and we live a block from the Gulf of Mexico).  Suddenly, I found myself engulfed by the Gulf-fog (pun intended).  I turned on my lights, slowed my pace, and continued home.

I wonder how many lives have been lost due to fog.  I wonder how many people have had to change their speed, their plans because of fog.

And, of course, after lunch as I headed back to the church, I drove right out of the fog into the brilliant sun-lit city.  It was a beautiful sight.

So, why did it get me thinking?  I’m glad you ask.

God is moving in wonderful ways.  In spite of me, God is touching lives and stirring hearts.  Conviction, commitment, excitement – they are all evident.  It’s wonderful to be in the brilliance of God’s movement.

But when God is moving, we also begin to see how Satan is moving…

  • Many people are seeking forgiveness and restoration.
  • Many people are seeing their newfound commitment challenged in different ways.
  • The ministerial staff are dealing with many hurts, pains, and worse.
  • The Light is showing darkness in many ways.

The fog is rolling in, and it is often hard to see past it.  Fog is real.  Fog is dangerous.  Fog makes it hard to see.  But even when there is fog, the sun is still shining, and the sun isn’t far ahead.

So, I want to challenge my church family (and any others who might stumble across my ramblings) to turn on your lights, slow down, be safe, and drive through the fog.  God is still God.  The sun is still shining.  And whatever you may be facing, this too shall pass.

  • “Why are you cast down, O my soul?  And why are you disquieted within me?  Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.” (Psalm 42:5)
  • “Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the LORD.” (Psalm 31:24)

I’m praying for you!
